My name is Charles and I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I have lived there for all my 21 years. During the time I have lived on the coast, i have experience many weather events. My first big weather event was the blizzard of 1993, my first snow. My first hurricane i experienced was hurricane Georges in 1998. Though not a real big hurricane, it really got me going in the weather field. I started tracking hurricanes and looking more into weather around my 8th grade year, when i picked up the name "weather man." I continued to track hurricanes through my highschool years, getting better and better at predicting at where i think the storms will go. I would sit in class during hurricane season and track a hurricane when the new report came out. I got my amateur radio license in November of 2003. After getting my license I joined the Mississippi Coast Amateur Radio Association and soon found out how important my radio license would become in response to hurricanes starting with hurricane Ivan. Though hurricane Ivan didn't make a direct hit on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, ham radio helped in getting real time reports for the National Weather Service. During hurricane Katrina, all forms of communication, even police and 911 communications, were disrupted, except ham radio. We were the only form of communication outside of the affected area. I worked at the Ocean Springs Civil Defense to help them get comminications back with Pascagoula and Harrison County. I am now attending the University of South Alabama majoring in Meteorology and a forecaster for the USA Weather Forecast Center and an Advanced Skywarn Storm Spotter. I am also an active storm chaser and chase, at the moment, local thunderstorms to help verify warnings for the National Weather Service, who i hope to work for one day. This summer I plan to take a trip to Illinois to storm chase for 2 weeks. During that time i hope to get some great video of supercell thunderstorms and hopefully a tornado or two. I have never seen a tornado in real life before and hope to see one soon. I will also keep an eye out during hurricane season and get some video if one comes close. Until then I will keep it local with a group that we have organized with a group of meteorology majors here at the University of South Alabama. 73's from KD5ZSM
My name is Robert Frye. I am a Junior Meteorology Student at the Univeristy of South Alabama. I'm orignally from the Chattanooga, TN area where I attended Marion County High School in Jasper, TN.(GO WARRIORS) I moved to Mobile, AL in August of 2005 to study the atmosphere and try and earn a Bachelors in Meteorology. Little did I know after my very first week of college and on my 18th birthday we would have Hurricane "Katrina". I stayed in Mobile for the storm and as with any "Katrina" survivor I have a story to tell. I first got interested in meteorology during the "Superstorm of 1993." My area in Tennessee had 24" of snow in less than 24 hours and it was the first and only time I saw Thundersnow. Then in 1995 we had hurricane Opal move into the Tennessee Valley which caused damage 400 miles inland. At the young age of 9, I started working for a local radio station. I worked at (AM) WEPG for 3 years before I moved on. At WEPG I made my very on forecast and did live storm coverage of severe weather from my home. I was known as "WEPG's Chief Meteorologist." I also reported school closings during snow or flash flooding events. At that time I was looking into broadcast meteorology; however, I decided to take another route. I would much rather work for a private forecasting firm or the National Weather Service. My main focus is Severe Weather because I've taken trips to Oklahoma and seen what "real" storms look like. Here on Tropical Weather Watch I'll be helping with Severe Weather events, Winter Weather Events in the Southeast US, and helping out with the Tropics. (Inland Threats, Part Time Updates, and Evacuations). Education Background Have completed: Meteorology-21 credit hours Math/Physics-29 credit hours Geography- 21 credit hours Some FAQ about me: Have you seen a Tornado? Yes, I saw an EF1 tornado in Bayou La Batre, AL on October 22, 2007 Have you seen a Hurricane? Yes, My first hurricane was Opal in TN;however, I stayed for Katrina here in Mobile. Have you ever went storm chasing? Yes, My first chase was early in 06. What is your favorite type of weather? I love every type of weather. However, if I had to choose it would be hurricanes. Will I see you on TV? No!!! TV met's have a lot of stress to deal with.
My name is Jason Holmes. I am fascinated with the various states of weather with special interest in severe weather. to meet the various demands of Alabama's weather I have recently become a Skywarn Advanced Storm Spotter. Through my continuing experiences maintain a growing collection of radar, satellite, and home video archives from severe weather events in my hometown of Birmingham, Alabama and at school in Mobile, Alabama. Since 2004, I now maintain active membership with both local and national organizations of the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. I continue to advance in the Meteorology program at the University of South Alabama. While I am steadily fulfillinng the coursework requerements and enjoying my meteorology classes, one of my advancing limitations lies within the necessary backgrounds of Calculus and Physics, buy I persist in my pursuit to fulfill what I believe is "my porpose - to aquire a working knowledge in Meteorology to be used to help others in the protection of life and property against severe, extreme, and hazardous weather." While weather is my prominent concern, he remains involved in other activities like computing, the Internet, communication techology, photography techniques and breadcasting through Television and radio. As one can see, it is difficult for me to be bored for long. Although interested in all of the above, a main priority of me is living a new life in Christ. "In 1999 I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Since that moment in time, it has been a worthwhile decision that I do not regret. Christ has given me assurance of my future, both on this earth and after I die. I cannot express the joy of having eternal security. The issue is simple: Jesus died on the cross to pay the pnealty of our sins and He resurrected on the third day; conquering sin, death, and the grave. This forgiveness and unconditional love that has been granted unto me is open to all! Don't reject the free gift of salvation! This truth is contained in the Bible, the sole authoritative Word of God and is open to all who will call upon the name of Jesus." "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life." - John 5:24 (NKJV)- Jason Holmes
